Newson Health helps train UK's first Menopause Yoga teachers
Published: 27th November 2019
Newson Health is proud to have helped train the UK’s first professionally accredited Menopause Yoga & Wellbeing (MY) teachers, on a course held here at Winton House in November.
Eight hand-picked yoga teachers travelled from Scotland, the North West, Midlands and the South East to attend the three-day training course led by Petra Coveney, who is certified by governing bodies the British Wheel of Yoga and Yoga Alliance Professionals.
The Menopause Yoga (MY) training included a myth-busting talk given by Newson Health’s Dr Sarah Ball who answered questions about HRT and other treatment options for symptoms of the menopause, with Dr Newson's book 'A Haynes Manual on Menopause' used as a course book for the students.
Dr Newson said: "I am delighted to have been able to host the first ever professional Menopause Yoga course at our Menopause and Wellbeing Centre. Yoga is a fantastic exercise for the entire body. It can also improve some of the symptoms of the menopause, including sleep disturbance, fatigue, low mood and anxiety. I’m also pleased to see that my manual is a course text. It is important that women receive factual, accurate information about the menopause."
Petra, who is a member of the British Menopause Society (BMS), began working with Dr Newson at the launch of the Centre and continues to run workshops and day retreats here.
Dr Newson added: "Petra is an excellent, experienced, professional teacher and trainer who has an in-depth knowledge of menopause and a passion to promote women’s health and wellbeing."
The intensive course includes specialist yoga, breathing and meditation practices to manage some menopause symptoms, as well as nutrition, natural remedies, complementary therapies, BMS medical guidelines on HRT, and the knowledge to signpost women to other professional experts.
Thanking Dr Newson and all of the medical and support staff, Petra Coveney said: "I am so grateful that the first Menopause Yoga teacher training could be held here; it is very poignant to be training in such a pioneering centre for women’s health and wellbeing. As a member of the British Menopause Society and the British Wheel of Yoga/ Yoga Alliance, I am committed to ensuring that women receive support that meets the highest standards set by Dr Newson and these governing bodies.
"It is my hope that Menopause Yoga teachers will be able to offer classes to women not just in yoga studios but also in GP’s surgeries, community centres, and other local places.
Here at Newson Health, we also offer weekly yoga sessions with expert teachers, but this ground-breaking training means that, from January 2020, women in other parts of the country will benefit from Menopause Yoga and wellbeing classes.
MY teacher training courses will be hosted at Newson Health in February and March 2020, and Petra will also be taking the training to venues across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
