Is Menopause a Taboo in Your Organisation?

This great article from the Harvard Business Review delves into the topic of menopause in the workplace and why, even though there are more women over the age of 50 in employment than ever before, there is still a taboo surrounding the topic.
The average age of the menopause is 51 and this group of women also represents the fastest growing portion of the UK workforce. For most women, when symptoms occur, then can last between four and eight years. So why are so many women not getting the support they need at work?
An excerpt from the article says "A recent Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) survey in the U.K. found that 59% of women experiencing menopausal symptoms said they had a negative impact on their work and around half found it difficult to cope with their tasks." That same survey from CIPD also found that nearly a third of the women surveyed took time off due to their symptoms but only a quarter felt as though they could tell their employer the reason for their absence.
Not only does this enlightening article explain some of the reasons why society is slow to have the menopause conversation, it also includes tips and advice on how we as individuals, and company leaders, can break down the taboo and implement positive structures within the workplace.
